Hurley led the University of Connecticut to back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. He is looking to become the first coach to win three straight college men’s basketball championships since UCLA’s John Wooden. Hurley has indicated he would be interested in eventually moving to the NBA, but apparently the chance to coach LeBron James on a $70 million contract wasn’t enough to lure him.
After the Lakers’ initial interest in Hurley was reported, we wrote that he should turn it down, and while the Lakers have a tough road to go to be competitive in the Western Conference, James turns 40 this season, so his chances are slim.
JJ Redick, who currently calls the 2024 NBA Finals for ABC/ESPN, was previously reported as the front-runner for the Lakers head coaching job, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.
