The advantage of being a broadcaster for Monday Night Football is that your voice reaches the entire football audience. The downside? The same thing.
Sports talk radio host Dan LeBatard was among those who noticed this on Monday night when he heard ESPN color analyst Troy Aikman using a particular phrase repeatedly regarding players and coaches.
Le Batard was surprised enough to jot down Aikman’s comments after the first half and share them on social media.
“The Denver roster is as deep as any in football,” he quoted Aikman.
“[Andy] Reid knows as much as anyone that they need to run the football.”
“Pat Bryant had as good a camp as anyone in football.”
“Denver has as deep a wide receiver room as anyone in football.”
“Denver has one of the best secondaries in football.”
“Trent McDuffie is as good as anyone in all of football.”
“That was just the first quarter,” Le Batard remarked to his audience.
He continued to take notes on Aikman’s remarks from the second quarter.

Le Batard addressed the disbelief of some of his social media followers, emphasizing, “I went back and wrote it down. I didn’t believe it at first. I thought, this can’t be what I’m hearing. I was listening casually… like, am I hearing this correctly?”
Aikman is definitely a talented broadcaster, but even the best can find themselves relying too heavily on familiar phrases, becoming somewhat predictable.
Though it may not feel great at the moment, getting called out occasionally can help prevent a slip into dullness and repetitiveness.
Aikman will figure it out—after all, he’s really among the best in broadcasting.
