Chiefs Struggle with 0-2 Start as Mahomes Remains Optimistic

The Kansas City Chiefs experienced a tough start to the 2025 season, suffering their second consecutive loss, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a scenario that hasn’t occurred for the Chiefs since 2014. Despite this unfamiliar position, Dan Marino, a legend in professional football, maintains a level of faith in the team’s ability to bounce back, stating that Kansas City has weathered adversity before.

Marino, who spoke about his own health challenges recently, suggested that the chief reason for his confidence is quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He remarked, “I think Patrick is probably the best quarterback in the league. He’s shown it in recent years. He’s incredibly talented and a natural leader. I believe he’ll rally the team.” Yet, he acknowledged their current record, saying, “It happens; you’ve got to deal with it. They’ve faced tough games, but I think they’ll be okay.”

Historically, starting the season 0-2 hasn’t boded well for playoff hopes. Statistically speaking, only five teams have made it to the playoffs after beginning the season with that record since 2020. While the numbers aren’t promising, the Chiefs have repeatedly defied the odds during Mahomes’ tenure. After all, they still have 15 regular-season games left to play.

One contributing factor to their slow start has been injuries affecting key positions. Second-year receiver Xavier Worthy is anticipated to rise as a primary target for Mahomes. Compounding the issue has been the inability to execute running plays effectively, with Mahomes himself leading the team with 123 rushing yards over the two games, while other running backs, like Isaiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, only managed 47 yards each.

Marino noted, “If all your top players aren’t healthy, it’s going to impact your offense. But finding ways to cope and minimizing mistakes is essential.” He commented, however, that he still believes in Mahomes’ capability to navigate the current challenges.

The Chiefs have not been outmatched outright; in the first week, they faced a formidable performance from Justin Herbert and the Chargers, who won with a near-perfect game in Brazil. The following week, the Eagles’ defense overpowered the offense to secure a victory, despite not playing at full strength themselves.

Next, the Chiefs are set to face another struggling team, the New York Giants, as they head to MetLife Stadium for a challenging match-up on Sunday night.
