Dan Orlovsky calls on Washington Commanders to compensate Terry McLaurin during his holdout

Orlovsky Critiques Washington Commanders’ Handling of McLaurin

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky shared his strong views on the Washington Commanders’ treatment of player Terry McLaurin. During an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” Orlovsky criticized the organization for not adequately compensating their top receiver, who has been absent from training camp due to a contract dispute.

Orlovsky didn’t hold back, stating, “Respectfully, Washington, you’ve been a garbage can for years. You were a laughing matter. The only good thing about your organization was the young man. Every year, he did it. There have been disasters around you for five or six years each year.”

Last season, the Commanders surprised many by advancing in the playoffs, thanks in part to a new coaching staff and rookie quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn. They made it to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since their last Super Bowl win in 1991, defeating the Detroit Lions along the way.

McLaurin, a key player drafted in 2019, has been crucial for the franchise. As his contract nears its end, he’s looking for a new extension, aiming to stay as Daniels’ primary target for the foreseeable future. However, reports suggest the team doesn’t value him at the same financial level as other top receivers, particularly as offseason deals skyrocket. For instance, the Pittsburgh Steelers recently granted DK Metcalf a lucrative contract after acquiring him from the Seattle Seahawks.

Orlovsky emphasized that McLaurin’s presence is vital for the team’s success in 2025. “If he’s not there, you’ll erase everything you did last year,” he argued. He also praised the contributions of Quinn and the general manager, Adams Peters, and made it clear that the team needs McLaurin to maintain their upward trajectory. “What receiver would influence your victories more than Terry McLaurin?” he asked. He mentioned players like Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, noting their impact on their respective teams.

At 29 years old, McLaurin has achieved over 1,000 receiving yards for five consecutive seasons, contributing significantly to the Commanders’ success last year with 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season. He added three touchdowns and 227 yards during the playoffs.

Although McLaurin is physically present, he hasn’t participated in practice as he awaits a formal contract agreement. There’s ongoing debate about what McLaurin should earn, but Orlovsky advocates for giving him the compensation he deserves. He warned that if McLaurin is absent in the 2025 season, it could disrupt the team’s offensive capabilities, leading to a setback compared to the previous year.
