Dan Patrick expressed that he found it “embarrassing” for the Phillies star Bryce Harper, particularly regarding how Harper handled his interaction with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and himself.
According to reports from the Post, Harper was involved in a heated exchange last Monday when Manfred visited the Phillies’ clubhouse and began discussing salary caps—an issue that’s been a topic of contention among players.
Harper interrupted Manfred, using strong language to confront him.
On his sports radio show, Patrick criticized the approach taken by Harper, noting, “The committee members are reaching out to players, and you respond like that?” He suggested that a more mature response would have been for Harper to engage meaningfully with Manfred rather than shutting him down.
Patrick continued, “At least the commissioner is attempting to communicate with the players. It’s worth acknowledging that.” He pointed out that Harper’s tone could have been more constructive, possibly opening a dialogue instead of rejecting Manfred’s overture entirely.
The commissioner’s office hasn’t revealed its goals for the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, but there’s a clear interest in aligning major league baseball with other North American leagues like the NHL, NBA, and NFL, which all utilize salary caps.
Harper’s interaction with Manfred was part of the commissioner’s ongoing outreach to players across different teams.
Patrick concluded by saying, “For Bryce Harper to behave that way, I mean, who does he think he is? He’s set financially. Yes, he’s advocating for the broader players’ interests, but this is the commissioner of baseball reaching out to you. If he were to remain silent, then I would have had a different perspective on Harper’s actions.”
