Washington Commanders’ Terry McLaurin Trade Talks
There are reports that the Washington Commanders are considering a trade involving star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Coach Dan Quinn addressed this situation on Saturday for the first time.
McLaurin, who’s 29, is at training camp but hasn’t participated in practices as he awaits a contract extension. It seems that both he and the team are in a bit of a holding pattern.
Despite McLaurin not practicing, Quinn expressed satisfaction over his presence at camp. “I’m just thrilled he’s here,” Quinn mentioned before a session. “I enjoy coaching him, but… well, you know, the business aspect? Where does that stand?” He added that anyone who views this as a distraction is mistaken.
McLaurin, who has a three-year, $68 million contract signed back in June 2022, is aiming for a new deal that positions him among the highest-paid wide receivers in the league. Last season was particularly impressive for him, as he racked up 1,096 receiving yards on 82 catches and 13 touchdowns. His playoff performance continued to shine, totaling 14 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns across three games.
Quinn noted that the request for trades is just part of the modern NFL landscape. “Players today are much more in tune with their contracts than before. They recognize that the business side is very real. In terms of the team, we’re simply focused on having strong practice sessions,” he remarked.
Quinn also pointed out their affection for McLaurin, stating, “We really appreciate having him with us. I hope he can start practicing soon, but we also recognize there’s a business part to manage—one that our general manager Adam Peters and Terry’s representatives will need to sort out.”
In McLaurin’s absence, Devo Samuel and tight end Zack Ertz will be the topping options for quarterback Jayden Daniels, who earned the offensive rookie of the year accolade last season.
Throughout his six-year career with the Commanders, McLaurin has emerged as their primary wide receiver and has been recognized with two Pro Bowl selections.
