Dan Turrentine Claims AOC Isn’t Prepared for the Spotlight Following Her Global Stage Mistake

Ocasio-Cortez’s Conference Response Sparks Criticism

Dan Turrentine, a former Democratic strategist, expressed concerns on Monday regarding Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s performance at the Munich Security Conference. He feels her lengthy and unfocused response to a question about U.S. military involvement in Taiwan indicated she may not be prepared for a presidential run.

The incident occurred on Friday when Bloomberg TV’s Francine Laqua asked Ocasio-Cortez if the U.S. should intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan. Turrentine commented on “The Huddle,” noting that even those on the left did not support her response, and she seemed to withdraw instead of addressing the situation head-on. He stated that the contrast between her polished stage presence and her off-stage behavior was telling.

“It was as if she were caught off guard on a significant platform, not just in a local setting. Her team may have hyped her appearance, but she appeared paralyzed,” Turrentine remarked. He also shared that she canceled additional media appearances over the weekend and received no backing online.

Turrentine observed, “When you’re on a platform like that, you need to be ready for anything. The way she left suggested that she might not be suited for the national stage just yet.” Following her response, Ocasio-Cortez’s team limited her public engagements during the conference, as noted by CNN.

In her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez said, “This is, of course, a very long-standing policy of the United States. We want to ensure that tensions do not escalate.” She added that efforts should focus on avoiding conflicts altogether.

Later, when asked by Katrin Benhold of the New York Times about her potential presidential ambitions, Ocasio-Cortez did not dismiss the idea of running in 2028. When questioned about imposing a wealth tax, she stated, “I don’t think we need to wait for some president to impose a wealth tax.” Interestingly, during her first congressional campaign in 2018, she had previously remarked, “I’m not a geopolitics expert,” when addressing complex issues.
