Dana White has been announced as one of three new members of Meta's board of directors, as founder Mark Zuckerberg insists Meta is moving away from fact-checking and censorship.
The UFC chairman was announced alongside Stellantis and Ferrari chairman John Elkann and former Microsoft general manager and head of global corporate strategy Charlie Songhurst.
“I love social media and am excited to be a small part of the future of AI and emerging technologies,” White wrote on his blog. X page.
“I had no interest in joining the board of directors until I received an offer to join Meta's board. I strongly believe that social media and Al are the future,” White continued. “There's nothing I love more than building brands, and I look forward to helping take Meta to the next level.”
The statement was accompanied by a photo of Mr. White and Mr. Zuckerberg, as well as a statement from the Facebook president himself.
“Dana is the President and CEO of UFC and has built UFC into one of the most valuable, fastest growing and most popular sports companies in the world. , and his ability to build such a beloved sports company,” Zuckerberg said.
“Even the U.S. government is promoting censorship.”
The new additions to Meta's board of directors were announced a day before Zuckerberg announced a major policy shift that, if his word is to be taken, signaled a desire to reduce political censorship.
Mr. Zuckerberg said: video About his company's return to its “roots of freedom of expression.”
He included a five-point plan aimed at “giving people a voice.”
“We've reached a point where there are too many mistakes and too much censorship,” Zuckerberg began. “Even if you accidentally censor just 1% of posts, that’s millions of people.”
Facebook's founder said his company would eliminate fact checkers and replace them with “X-like community notes.”
Next, Zuckerberg said Meta will “simplify” content policies and “remove a lot of restrictions” on topics like immigration and gender.
“What started as a movement to be more inclusive has gone too far, increasingly being used to shut down voices and shut out people who think differently. “I want to be able to share my experiences with others,” he said. He explained.
Zuckerberg's third point surrounded filters that “scan for policy violations.”
The filter will reportedly now focus on “tackling illegal and high-severity violations.”
”The problem is that filters make mistakes and remove a lot of content that shouldn't be removed. Therefore, dialing back can dramatically reduce the amount of censorship on the platform. ”
End censorship?
Mr. Zuckerberg said he would work with President Trump to stop governments trying to pressure U.S. companies to censor them.
Mr. Zuckerberg announced that he was “bringing back civic content.” “The community has been asking us to watch less for a while because it's stressing people out,” he claimed.
Zuckerberg said Meta has since stopped recommending political content, but now users are letting the platform know they want to see this content because “it feels like we're entering a new era.”
The 40-year-old went on to explain censorship efforts by governments around the world, including the United States. Zuckerberg pointed to the “institutionalization of censorship” in Europe, “secret courts” in Latin America, and China simply banning its own apps, and said that over the past four years, “even the U.S. government has pushed for censorship.” I have done so,” he said.
“But now we have an opportunity to restore freedom of expression, and I'm excited to embrace it,” he added. “It's going to take time to get this right, and these are complex systems. They'll never be perfect,” Zuckerberg continued.
Perhaps in a show of good faith, Meta's trust and safety and content moderation teams have been relocated from California to Texas, where the team is said to have “less concerns about bias.”
