Sedin Twins Take on Leadership Role with Canucks

It’s pretty remarkable when you think about it—back in 1999, the Vancouver Canucks landed identical twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin as the second and third overall picks in the NHL Draft. They both dedicated their entire 17-season careers to the Canucks.

Now, they’ve stepped into the roles of co-presidents of hockey operations for the team. It makes me wonder if they’ll actually function independently in these positions or if their thoughts will always be intertwined.

After retiring in 2018, the Sedins joined the Canucks’ front office the next year. Following some major shifts, including the firing of general manager Patrick Albin and the resignation of Jim Rutherford, the team has entered a new era.

Francesco Aquilini, the team’s owner, noted, “For the past 26 years, Daniel and Henrik have dedicated their entire professional hockey careers to Vancouver. They have always strived for excellence, whether it be as players or in various management positions.” Their commitment speaks volumes.

Meanwhile, the organization has promoted Ryan Johnson from assistant general manager to general manager.

The new leadership might actually spur some fresh ideas. The team appeared set for a promising run in the 2024 playoffs, though things spiraled downward in the following two seasons, including the surprising trade of Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

Clearly, there’s a need for renewal, and hopefully, the Sedins can inject some much-needed change.

Looking ahead, one of the first significant decisions will arise at the upcoming NHL Draft in June. The Canucks hold the No. 3 overall pick, just behind the Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks.

This presents a great chance to infuse new talent into the squad, particularly given the need for bolstered defense after the Hughes trade. While Gavin McKenna is the likely No. 1 pick, there are several highly-rated defensemen who could be a perfect fit, including Chase Reed, Carson Carells, and Albert Smits.
