Daniel Cormier says Paul vs. Tyson is a ‘lose-lose’

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier says there is no way a fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson would end with Paul coming out the winner.

The former UFC two-weight champion spoke out against his former UFC classmate Ben Askren, saying,Funky and Champ“A podcast about the Paul vs. Tyson fight. Two athletes with an age difference of nearly 30 years will box together in a Netflix sports special.”

Cormier responded to comments made by UFC commentator Joe Rogan. said Tyson will still be able to “smack his head into another dimension” when he's Paul's age.

“I think it's a loss for Jake Paul either way. If he beats Mike Tyson, everyone will love Mike Tyson.”

“A 58-year-old Mike Tyson isn't a 50-year-old Mike Jones down the street. Tyson is a different kind of person. If Tyson can get a hold of you, he can slam your head into another dimension,” Rogan said.

Cormier agreed, saying watching Tyson hit the pads “looks like he still has something left in him.”

“But then you watch Jake Paul fight Mike Perry and Jake Paul is so backed into a corner that it looks like Mike Perry has a chance. But Jake's young, 28-years-old, and he has the energy to draw from and keep fighting.”

Cormier said he was concerned that the 58-year-old Tyson might not have enough energy left to fight Paul if the fight went on for more than a few rounds.

“That’s my concern: What happens if a 58-year-old guy is fighting a 28-year-old guy and Mike can’t throw a punch? [reserve energy]”?” Cormier asked.

The former boxer also said that no matter what happens, Paul will be considered the loser after the fight because of Tyson's age and the respect the crowd has for him.

“I think it's a loss for Jake Paul either way because if he beats Mike Tyson, everybody loves Mike Tyson…Mike Tyson doesn't actually need the money,” Cormier continued. “I'm amazed he's fighting…But what if Mike knocks him out? That's it. It's over. It would be the biggest backfire in history. If he gets knocked out, it'll never happen in the history of the sport.”

The Nov. 15, 2024 fight had already been postponed from its planned July date due to a flight delay caused by Tyson's health issues.

“30 minutes before landing, his ulcer worsened, causing him to become nauseous and dizzy,” Tyson's representative said at the time. “He is grateful to the medical staff who rushed to his aid.”

Tyson has answered questions about his age many times before the fight, saying that age is no barrier, along with the fact that he is the only fighter of his age who can inspire such excitement.

“I'm 58 years old, and you know what? I get billions of viewers just talking to somebody about fighting,” Tyson told Fox News. “Everybody's jealous, even most athletes, and it's crazy. … I say, 'I couldn't even draw a million people in my prime.' What are you talking about, I wouldn't have sold out.” [an] “Is there a 58-year-old who can fill an 80,000-seat arena?”
