Daniel Day-Lewis states he 'never planned' to stop acting

Daniel Day Lewis Returns to Acting

Daniel Day Lewis is stepping back into the spotlight. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Oscar-winning actor shared his reasons for coming out of retirement to star in his son Ronan’s new film, “Anemone.”

“Looking back, I suppose I should have kept quiet,” Day Lewis, who announced his retirement in 2017, reflected. “It turns out to be a pretty fascinating topic to discuss.”

“I didn’t really mean to retire,” he admitted. “I stepped away from acting to explore other opportunities. Apparently, some folks think I’ve retired twice now. I never planned to quit entirely!”

Day Lewis described himself as someone with “a lot of pride,” noting that while he intends to wrap up this particular role, he never lost his passion for acting.

“The love for the work itself has never waned,” he stated. “I’ve always cherished what I do.” Yet, he confessed to being hesitant about returning, citing “fear” as a strong influence.

He also reflected on the toll that acting can take on him: “There’s a certain emptiness I’ve felt, something I’ve known well. It’s all a part of the journey, leading to a sort of rebirth.”

After his last film, “Phantom Thread,” in 2017, he felt strongly that he might not act again. “I thought it was best to step back,” he added. “Because I hadn’t really presented anything new.” Yet, after eight years away, he discovered that Ronan was working on a film, which reignited his interest in acting.

“It struck me that it’d be wonderful to collaborate and explore different possibilities, without needing extensive production resources,” Day Lewis explained.

His collaboration with his son on Ronan’s directorial debut has brought him “pure joy.” “As I age, it takes me some time to get back into the groove,” he shared. “But working with Ronan really reignited my passion.”

Written together, “Anemone” delves into the intricate relationships between brothers and fathers and sons. The cast includes Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Saffia Oakley Green.

Day Lewis also reflected on his retirement announcement from June 2017, revealing he was uncertain about why he decided to step away. “It just settled on me,” he said, expressing a sense of sadness about it. “If this leads to a joyful new chapter, then how strange that feels.”
