Drunk Driver Found Guilty in July 4th Tragedy

A counselor, under the influence of alcohol, has been convicted of fatally harming four individuals during a Fourth of July event in Manhattan. This recent verdict could lead to a life sentence for the perpetrator.

Daniel Heiden, aged 44, was declared guilty on multiple charges, including second-degree murder and aggravated vehicular homicide, following a jury trial that lasted two weeks. Judge April Newbauer announced the decision in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday.

“The defendant was found guilty on all 12 charges,” the judge stated during the hearing.

Heiden, who has identified as a substance abuse counselor and authored an autobiography titled “The Sober Addict” about his own battle with addiction, is set to receive his sentence on December 3. Reports suggest he might face 25 years in prison.

Prosecutors outlined the chaotic events of July 4, 2024, when Heiden, after being ejected from a bar in Lower Manhattan, got behind the wheel of a Ford F-150. He then crashed through a fence into a gathering at a park, where attendees were waiting to view the city’s renowned fireworks display.

Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bogdanos described the moment, saying, “He was still revving his engine when he hit 11 people.” Disturbingly, the car eventually stopped only because it was resting atop a victim.

According to prosecutors, Heiden’s vehicle struck the crowd at a speed of 52 mph, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to seven others. His blood alcohol concentration was reported at 0.17, which is more than double the legal limit.

Survivors recounted the traumatic scene that unfolded, with one mother sharing the horror of discovering her daughter trapped beneath Heiden’s truck. Liliana Lewis testified, “I saw her, Emily,” referring to her daughter, 31 years old.

Fortunately, Liliana was in the bathroom when the incident occurred and later faced the agonizing decision to take her daughter off life support, as Emily was declared brain dead.

This tragedy also claimed the lives of Herman Pinckney, 38, along with his two aunts, Lucille Pinckney, 59, and Anna Morrell, 43.

Numerous survivors provided harrowing testimonies about the events of that day. Liliana Lewis recounted how she identified her brother and nephew at the hospital post-incident, sharing the painful imagery of seeing her loved ones covered in blood.
