Daniel Jones and Colts begin discussions on long-term contract following quarterback's injury

Daniel Jones Could Stay in Indianapolis

It seems Daniel Jones might stick around in Indianapolis after all.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, there’s been a recent update regarding Jones’ contract situation with the Colts. The team signed him to a one-year deal worth $14 million ahead of the 2025 season.

Pelissero mentioned on Monday, “This week is significant for both the Colts and Daniel Jones, who’s in talks for a multi-year extension to remain in Indianapolis.” He added that Jones is eager to stay, and the Colts are just as keen to keep him, especially since he was performing well last season prior to his injury.

Furthermore, Pelissero indicated that the Colts might consider using a franchise or transition tag for Jones, with a deadline looming on March 3rd. While negotiations could be tricky due to his injury history, it might outweigh the complexities of a long-term contract.

Jones is hoping for a more permanent deal, but given the Colts’ salary cap situation, the tag might be a more practical choice. This way, he wouldn’t hit the free market just yet.

Pelissero raised an interesting question, asking, “What financial figures would make sense for a long-term contract?” He believes the discussions happening this week will be crucial for determining the path forward for Jones in Indianapolis.

As highlighted, a significant barrier is indeed Jones’ injury—he tore his Achilles tendon late in the 2025 regular season, prompting the Colts to bring Philip Rivers out of retirement to fill in.

Jones had helped lead the Colts to an 8-5 record, passing for 3,101 yards, with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions before the injury struck. However, it’s still uncertain if he’ll be ready to return by the beginning of the 2026 season.

Interestingly, Jones’ recent accomplishments almost seem to parallel Saquon Barkley’s resurgence with the Eagles. Both players, former Giants, faced abandonment from their organization, though for different reasons.

While with the Giants, Jones encountered turnover issues, a series of injuries, including a torn ACL back in 2023, and overall inconsistency.

As a first-round pick in 2019, he guided the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, resulting in a hefty four-year, $160 million contract extension. Yet, he managed to participate in only 16 out of 68 games under that deal before being released after just two seasons.

Now, he’s looking to revitalize his career, and it appears that Indianapolis could be the place to do it.
