The Daniel Jones era is all but over with Tommy DeVito announced to start under center on Sunday when the 2-8 Giants host the Buccaneers.
His six seasons had more lows than highs, but here are the four most memorable in each category.
The Peaks
January 15, 2023: Leaderman
In his first and only career playoff win, an upset victory over the Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round Game in January 2023, Jones was nothing short of sensational. He completed 24 of 35 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards to lead the Giants to their first postseason victory in 11 years.
September 22, 2019: Eternal Debut
Led by Jones, who replaced Eli Manning in Week 3, the Giants trailed the Buccaneers by 18 points at halftime and lost Saquon Barkley to a high ankle sprain. Jones responded with three second-half touchdown drives, including a run from 7 yards out with 1:16 left to give the Giants their first lead of the game. Jones completed 23-of-36 for 336 yards, two touchdown passes and two scores.
January 1, 2023: Standing O, eligible for playoffs
In Week 17, against the Colts for a playoff berth, Jones completed 19 of 24 passes for 268 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns. It was a true rout — the final score was 38-10 — and as time ticked down, Jones received a curtain call from New York.
October 3, 2021: Day 402
Jones was all over the Superdome, completing 28 of 40 for a career-high 402 yards, two touchdowns, and an improbable come-from-behind victory. The Saints trailed by 11 points midway through the fourth quarter, but Jones tied it with two points late in regulation and had another TD drive in overtime.
The Valleys
Monday: Benching
Only Tommy Cutlet can save New York. Also.
November 10th: The worst and last
In what was likely his last appearance with the Giants, Jones threw two interceptions — one at Carolina — in an embarrassing 20-17 loss to the Panthers, considered the worst team. 21-yard line, second time at the Carolina 8-yard line — in the league.
November 5, 2023: Knee injury
In Jones' first game since returning from a three-game absence due to a neck injury, the quarterback crumpled to the ground without being touched. An MRI scan the next day confirmed the worst case scenario. At the end of the season, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
March 7, 2023: The $160 Million Man
Jones would say this belongs at the peak. Giants fans may disagree, as Jones has gone just 3-13 as a starter since signing a four-year, $160 million contract. John Mara plans to recover the economic costs. The emotional scars will remain forever.
