Daniel Jones' performance in his initial preseason game with the Colts

Daniel Jones’ Colts Debut Mirrors Giants Career

Daniel Jones’ first game with the Colts felt strikingly similar to his time with the Giants. In a preseason matchup against the Ravens, Jones and the Colts faced an unexpected 24-16 loss on Thursday.

Ending the night with 10 completions out of 21 attempts, he racked up 144 yards. While he didn’t turn the ball over, he also didn’t lead any drives resulting in touchdowns.

Meanwhile, before getting sidelined due to injury, rookie Anthony Richardson managed to complete two of three passes, totaling 21 yards.

The competition for the starting quarterback position has been heating up. After Richardson’s injury, Jones stepped in but didn’t quite capitalize on the opportunity to shine amid the ups and downs of the game.

He took charge during the Colts’ second drive roughly eight minutes in, handling all the quarterback responsibilities until halftime, while rookie Riley Leonard played through the second half.

On Jones’ first complete drive, he managed to get a first down, but the team was forced to punt shortly afterward due to a loss of nine yards on three plays.

However, he bounced back to help the Colts score a field goal, aided by two key passing plays exceeding 20 yards. Unfortunately, the next series ended in another punt, though a field goal was made by kicker Spencer Schladder.

Leonard’s performance in the second half left much to be desired. He threw for 92 yards on 24 attempts with a pair of interceptions, yet he did add 34 rushing yards, highlighted by a notable 21-yard run that ultimately contributed to one touchdown drive.

Post-game, Colts head coach Shane Steichen provided an update on Richardson’s injury, stating, “His pinky jumped out and then ran out again.”

Jones signed with the Colts during the offseason on a one-year contract worth $14 million, taking on the challenge against Richardson, who has faced injuries and inconsistencies in his first two years.
