Daniel Selznick, TV producer and scion of legendary Hollywood family, dies at 88

Daniel Selznick, producer of films like Gone with the Wind and Blood Faded and the last person directly involved with Hollywood’s iconic family, has died. He was 88 years old.

Selznick died of natural causes on Thursday at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, California, where he had lived for many years, Fox News Digital confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Motion Picture and Television Fund told Fox News Digital that Selznick will be remembered for his “intelligence, charm, kindness and generosity.”

Selznick is the second son of famed Gone with the Wind producer David O. Selznick and theater producer Eileen Mayer Selznick, and the grandson of MGM studios co-founder Louis B. Mayer and his first wife Margaret Schenberg Mayer.

Born May 18, 1936, Selznick grew up in Beverly Hills and graduated from Harvard University. He also attended Geneva College and completed graduate studies at Brandeis University.

Selznick followed in his famous family’s footsteps and began his career in the entertainment industry, serving as a production executive at Universal Studios for four years and producing the 1988 documentary “Gone with the Wind: Birth of a Legend” with his late brother, Jeffrey Selznick.

The Peabody Award-winning documentary chronicles the making of his father’s 1939 Academy Award-winning film “Gone with the Wind,” which was filmed when Jeffrey was six and Selznick was three.

Selznick’s father also produced many classic films, including “Rebecca,” which won an Academy Award in 1940, “The Prisoner of Zenda,” “A Star is Born,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “The White Horror” and “The Good Duel.”

His mother produced the original Broadway production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy, and she was nominated for a Tony Award for producing the 1995 play “The Chalk Garden.”

Selznick produced the TV movies “Blood Feud” and “Night Drive,” as well as “The Reagan Way,” which he also directed, and the 1987 miniseries “Hoover v. Kennedy: The Second Civil War.”

Selznick served for several years as a trustee of the nonprofit Louis B. Mayer Foundation and was also a successful theater producer, producing the play “The Man with the Perfect Wife,” which starred his mother-in-law, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Jones.

While living at Motion Picture Country Home, Selznick wrote a memoir about his Hollywood experiences, “Walking with Kings,” which is due to be published next year by Alfred Knopf Publishing.

According to his obituary, Selznick, who was married thrice, has no immediate survivors.
