Daniel Spencer, known for her role as Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” has died at the age of 60. Her passing was confirmed on Monday from a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Spencer had been diagnosed with breast cancer and, in 2018, underwent emergency surgery due to brain bleeding. A GoFundMe page was established to assist with her medical costs during that time.
Her co-star, Haywood Nelson, shared the news on social media, expressing the immense courage Spencer displayed throughout her struggles. He posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, noting that she was a “positive, practical warrior,” and recognized her as someone who has transitioned from a long battle with cancer.
Nelson reflected on losing his daughter, siblings, and members of the “What’s Happening!!” cast while honoring Spencer’s legacy. Other co-stars, like Holly Robinson Peete, also expressed their grief, with Peete noting the sadness of Spencer’s passing.
In her role on the show, Spencer played the younger sister of Roger “Large” Thomas and brought a memorable charm to her character. After her acting career, she became a veterinarian in 1993, a profession that aligned with her deep love for animals. Nelson likened her passion for animals to that of the late Betty White.
In a past interview, Spencer spoke about her lifelong interest in animal care, chemistry, and the human body. She emphasized the importance of pursuing happiness, encouraging others to live for the moment and enjoy life.
