Medvedev dropped a set and fell 2-1 behind, and it looked like the fifth-ranked player would face elimination. However, Medvedev quickly turned things around and won the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
“If we had played this match at the end of last year, we probably would have lost,” Medvedev said after the match. “New year, new energy.”

Medvedev hopes to start the 2025 season with a win in Melbourne. Medvedev, who has reached the final three times including last year, has never won the Australian Open. His biggest challenger will be Novak Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open 10 times, more than any other male player.
