Danish Prime Minister states 'sovereignty' is not up for discussion as Trump praises Greenland's 'framework'

Danish Prime Minister Reasserts Greenland’s Sovereignty Amid U.S. Negotiations

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has made it clear that Denmark will not entertain any discussions concerning Greenland’s sovereignty, even after President Donald Trump’s mention of a “framework” for a potential U.S. purchase of the Arctic territory.

Frederiksen emphasized her openness to dialogue with allies as long as Denmark’s “territorial integrity” is maintained. She stated, “Arctic security is an issue for all NATO allies. Thus, it’s both fitting and natural to discuss this with the NATO Secretary-General and the U.S. President. Denmark has been actively working with NATO for years to bolster its commitment in the Arctic.” She also indicated that negotiations could cover various political matters, like security and investment, but sovereignty would remain non-negotiable.

“Only Denmark and Greenland can make choices regarding their own affairs. We wish to sustain a constructive conversation with allies about enhancing Arctic security, including aspects like the U.S. Golden Dome, as long as our territorial integrity is respected,” she remarked.

Her statements followed Trump’s announcement on social media, asserting that a productive meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had led to the development of a framework for an agreement related to Greenland and the broader Arctic region. Trump added, “Once finalized, this arrangement will benefit both the United States and all NATO countries.” He mentioned terms about not imposing the previously planned tariffs effective February 1, citing ongoing discussions regarding Greenland.

During his address at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Trump implied that he didn’t plan to resort to force in securing Greenland. He shared his thoughts on NATO, saying, “It’s unlikely we’d achieve anything unless we opt for excessive force—something I won’t be doing.” He reiterated, “I will not use force. The U.S. simply desires Greenland.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen welcomed Trump’s assurances against military occupation and the suspension of a trade conflict, stating, “Let’s collaborate on addressing U.S. security concerns in the Arctic while respecting our boundaries.”
