Today, the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays resumed a game that had been stopped in the second inning due to heavy rain on June 26. Danny Jansen was at bat as the designated hitter for the Blue Jays.
When play resumed today, Jansen was at home plate again.
Only he was crouching behind it as a Red Sox catcher.
Jansen was traded to Boston at the MLB trade deadline, and the Red Sox designated backup catcher Reese McGwire for assignment, opening up an opportunity for Boston and Jansen to make unique baseball history.
They did it today, making Jansen the first MLB player in history to play in a game for both teams.
MLB shared some amazing images of Jansen warming up for the game in his new Red Sox uniform while the scoreboard showed him at bat for the Blue Jays.
Meanwhile, Boston’s social media team had a bit of fun with the moment.
Jansen singled for the Red Sox in the fifth inning after hitting a liner in his first at-bat.
Boston coach Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen will play when the team resumes play on Friday, subject to the circumstances.
“Yeah, he’s catching the ball. Let’s make history,” Cora said. He told reporters last week.
History was made.
