Injured Georgia Running Back Remains Hospitalized After ATV Accident

A Georgia football player is currently hospitalized in Atlanta following serious injuries sustained in an ATV accident.

Dante Dowdell was involved in the incident near his home in Picayune, Michigan, and is now receiving care at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart discussed the situation during SEC Media Days, stressing that the details surrounding the accident are sparse.

“He’s hurt,” Smart stated. “We don’t really know when he’ll be back, or all the specifics. It was a recreational vehicle accident, and he’s seriously injured.”

In a separate conversation with reporters in Tampa, Smart explained that the injuries were significant enough for Dowdell to have been discharged from two different hospitals, as reported by Dawg Nation.

Currently, Dowdell is being treated at a facility that specializes in spinal cord and brain injuries, which adds to the gravity of his condition.

After transferring from Kentucky to Georgia in the offseason, Dowdell was seen as a key player just behind starter Nate Frazier on this year’s running back depth chart. He had previously played at Oregon in 2023, Nebraska in 2024, and spent last season with Kentucky, where he tallied 560 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Smart expressed admiration for Dowdell, both as a player and as a person, saying how tough this situation is for everyone involved.

“He’s a really great kid with a wonderful family,” Smart acknowledged. “Our players went to visit him. It’s a really challenging scenario.” Dowdell still has a fifth year of eligibility available due to the new NCAA rules.

While the severity of Dowdell’s injury raises concern, Georgia has the depth needed to cope with his absence as they head into the upcoming season. Along with Frazier, running backs Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips Jr. will return, and the team has also welcomed new recruits Jay Lamar and Nick Peel for the 2026 cycle.
