Darius Slay contemplating retirement after being acquired by the Bills

Darius Slay’s Future in Question After Bills Waiver Move

The Buffalo Bills recently placed cornerback Darius Slay on waivers, aiming to strengthen their secondary as they prepare for the playoffs. However, Slay seems uncertain about continuing his football career.

According to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Slay has decided to take some time away from the team to contemplate his next steps. “I’m honored that a prestigious organization like the Bills has acquired me, but I’m taking some time off from football and will decide whether to continue playing in the next few days,” Rosenhaus mentioned.

Slay, who will turn 35 on New Year’s Day, had previously played for the Pittsburgh Steelers after a successful stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he contributed to their Super Bowl win in 2024. With the Steelers, he participated in 10 games before being released in order to create roster space for wide receiver Adam Thielen. During his time there, he made 36 tackles, recorded three deflections, and recovered one fumble.

If Slay opts not to report, the Bills might have inadvertently lost out on a defensive asset. In fact, they had released defensive back Ja’Marcus Ingram to accommodate Slay’s arrival, but Ingram was subsequently picked up by the Houston Texans.

Bringing Slay onboard could provide the Bills with much-needed depth in their secondary. Throughout the season, players like Tre’Davious White and rookie Maxwell Hairston have been stationed alongside Christian Benford.

Slay’s football journey began at Mississippi State, where he earned recognition before being selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent seven years with the Lions, where he achieved one All-Pro selection and three Pro Bowl appearances. Later, he joined the Eagles in 2020 and continued his successful career until the 2024 season, making three additional Pro Bowl appearances.
