Unexpected Turn in Ghostly Series
Ghost stories can be entertaining, but sometimes they take a dark turn.
A few years back, Calvin “Speedy” Wilburn, a long-time co-host on the “Rick and Bubba Show,” explored a haunted site for a segment in the now-discontinued “Rick and Babashaw” series. His experience didn’t go as planned when confronted by real-life demons.
The show, titled “13 Days of Horror,” was meant to be a light-hearted Halloween special. As Rick describes it, think of it as a mix of “Scooby-Doo” and “Ghostbusters.” But soon enough, the crew realized that the horror here was anything but fun.
In the latest episode of “Strange Encounters,” Speedy recounts a chilling encounter that left him shaken and ultimately led to the series’ cancellation.
“13 Days of Horror” primarily involved visiting historical landmarks rumored to be haunted. Speedy and the film crew collaborated with paranormal groups, using infrared cameras and EMF meters, eager to investigate the darker aspects of the country.
However, one particularly cold night in Alabama shifted their usual routine. Instead of another landmark, they found themselves in a woman’s home with her young daughter. The moment they arrived, the crew noticed the girl had bloody wounds on her body. The mother shared a chilling tale about a candle that was mysteriously blown around the house, waking her daughter in the middle of the night.
Upon entering the house, Speedy sensed something was off. It felt like a heavy, oppressive darkness surrounded him.
The paranormal investigators started asking questions, trying to reach out to any spirits present. They even queried the young girl, trying to understand the strange phenomena she was experiencing.
It wasn’t long before Speedy felt the gravity of the situation. Deciding they needed to leave, the team understood that this was no longer a playful investigation.
In the car, one crew member reviewed photos taken that night. Strangely, the pictures were mostly black, save for numerous eerie “orbs” floating throughout.
That’s when the crew fully grasped that their experience was no lighthearted ghost story. Speedy reflected on how naive they had been, realizing the seriousness of what they had encountered.
The incident put an end to “13 Days of Horror,” but it wasn’t the only unsettling experience the crew faced. There was a time when they felt genuinely terrified after exploring an abandoned mental institution.
Speedy also shared hair-raising anecdotes from his past, such as door-to-door evangelism, where he encountered a woman who proclaimed Jesus’ name with a force that made the hair stand on end, or a sick patient who spoke in an unfamiliar voice. These events highlighted a somber reality that was far removed from the casual spookiness they had initially sought out.
