Darnell Nurse Seeks Trade from Oilers
It seems Darnell Nurse is ready for a change. The Oilers’ defenseman has officially requested a trade after spending 12 years with the Edmonton franchise, as various reports have indicated.
Notably, Nurse ranks seventh in total games played for the Oilers, which is quite a prestigious company when you think about legends like Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky, and Jari Kurri.
Interestingly, Nurse holds a full no-trade clause until July 1, 2027. This means that he has the final say on any potential move. However, he’s reportedly provided the team with a list of three to five destinations he’s interested in, according to sources.
Last season, Nurse wrapped up with seven goals, 17 assists, and 24 points over 82 games, averaging just over 20 minutes of ice time per game. He also ended the season with a -12 rating, which isn’t ideal by any means.
It won’t be simple for any team looking to acquire him, given that he carries a hefty cap hit of $9.25 million through 2029. Still, after dedicating his entire career to the Oilers, he seems eager to find a fresh start.
Nurse played an essential role in guiding the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2024 and 2025, though the team did face a disappointing early exit after a six-game series loss to the Ducks in the first round of the playoffs.
With this trade request unfolding, changes could also be on the horizon for the coaching staff. Following the disappointing playoff outcome, the team’s head coach, Kris Knoblausch, was let go after more than two seasons.
While the Oilers sought permission to speak with former Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy and weren’t granted it, reports suggest they are now considering Mike Babcock. Nothing has been confirmed as of now, but Babcock’s controversial past—particularly his brief stint with the Blue Jackets before resigning amid allegations involving player privacy—adds an interesting layer to the unfolding situation.
Babcock, who won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008, also led teams to the Finals in 2003 and 2009. After being dismissed by the Maple Leafs in 2019, concerns about his treatment of players have emerged, complicating his prospects going forward.
