Darren Hayes of Savage Garden had ‘terrible accident’ leading to broken jaw

Savage Garden lead singer Darren Hayes has recovered from serious injuries shortly after suffering from the loss of his mother.

“Really as crazy as it was,” the singer shared a photo of his swollen jaw and x-ray images on Instagram, explaining that he had a “bad accident.”

In the caption, Hayes wrote on March 17, exactly two months after his mother passed away, “I lost consciousness – I got out of bed and collapsed three times, and every time I was unconscious.”

“The trauma of the dull force was very serious, I snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, and I had a terrible pain on the left side of my head, shattering nine teeth.”

The 52-year-old said he was “very lucky” and thanked the medical team at St. John’s Providence in Santa Monica.

“If I had landed in another position, I could have died. They scanned and ruled out any heart problems and neurological issues.”

Hayes had an emergency reconstruction surgery, inserted titanium brace into his jaw, and his mouth was closed for eight weeks.

The Australian-born singer says he experienced several lightheads and fainting spells before the incident, and the cause of which is being investigated by his medical team.

“So far, my heart is normal, my arteries are normal, there is no brain tumor or anything that can cause an accident,” he said, “There’s no judgment for anyone who doesn’t take drugs or drink alcohol. This was a complete shock.”

Hayes is half of pop-rock duo Savage Garden, with Daniel Jones appearing on guitar and keyboards, and is known for his late 90s hits such as “I Want You,” “Really Deep, Deep,” and “I Loved You.”

Although Savage Garden was split up on each billboard in 2001, Hayes continued his solo career.

He thanked the fans for understanding why they “don’t act for quite some time.”
