Darren Waller reveals unexpected details about his NFL retirement

Darren Waller Announces NFL Retirement

After nine seasons and experiences with three different teams, Darren Waller has chosen to retire from the NFL following the 2023 season.

He played 12 games with the New York Giants, marking the end of his professional football career. In a video shared on his YouTube channel last June, Waller expressed that his “passion for football” was beginning to fade.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, he reflected, “I’ve decided to retire from soccer games. To God: What a journey, and thank you. We took it so much further than we could imagine! I’m incredibly grateful for all the people who were part of this journey and created memories along the way.”

At 31, Waller felt it was time to step away from the game.

Looking back at his NFL career, Waller shared some insights that led to his decision. He mentioned recognizing his readiness to retire during a game against the Buffalo Bills, recalling the intensity of that moment when he felt a deep realization wash over him.

“It was the first quarter and we were executing a running play. I was leading the hole, yet I found myself sitting on the sidelines, reflecting,” he said during a recent podcast appearance. “I was looking at the sky, not really sure why, but in that moment, I realized that while I wanted to make the most of my abilities this year, it would definitely be my last.”

Waller’s season with the Giants was not without its challenges, including health setbacks. He ended the year with 552 receiving yards and one touchdown, but missed several games due to a hamstring injury.

In a personal transition, 2024 also saw Waller’s marriage to WNBA star Kelsey Plum come to an end, as they filed for divorce in Las Vegas in April.
