Former NFL Linebacker Daron Lee Charged with Murder
Daron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, has been charged with first-degree murder in Tennessee and will remain in custody. He was arrested last week and faces additional charges for tampering with evidence linked to his girlfriend’s death.
A judge in Hamilton County Criminal Court ruled on Wednesday that Lee, who played his initial three seasons with the New York Jets, will be held without bail. Although his next court appearance is not until next month, prosecutors hinted that the case might involve the death penalty.
The District Attorney, Coty Wamp, mentioned in court that while no final decision has been made regarding the death penalty, factors from the case could indeed qualify it for such a severe sentence. Wamp described the situation, noting, “Mr. Lee was living with a woman and, for lack of a better term, he was bludgeoned to death.” She also argued against bail, stating that his explanation did not make sense.
A detective from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office provided further insights during the testimony. Detective Brian Lockhart recounted finding a chaotic scene upon entering the home. “The deceased was lying on his back on the floor. There was blood up the stairs, on the railing, the walls, and the living room floor,” he reported.
The victim was living with Lee, and it’s believed that the alleged crimes occurred over a span of about ten days in their rented house. Detectives who attended the autopsy were informed that blunt force trauma was a potential cause of death; however, the autopsy report is still pending.
Emergency responders discovered the deceased woman in her home in Ooltewah, Chattanooga, while trying to perform CPR. Lee initially suggested that she might have fallen in the shower, but investigators found substantial blood stains throughout the house, which contradicted that claim.
The arrest affidavit detailed multiple types of trauma on the woman’s body, including a stab wound, bite marks, and visible bruising. Additional discoveries at the scene included alcohol, drugs, and a firearm. Lee himself had injuries, including cuts on his face and hands, a chest wound, and blood stains on his cellphone case.
Authorities also noted evidence of attempted cleaning in areas with blood stains, as well as cleaning supplies nearby. District Attorney Wamp pointed out that Lee is currently on probation in multiple states for various assaults.
Lee’s public defender stated that it’s premature to comment on the case. Lee was selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Jets, later playing with the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. His last appearance in the NFL was in 2020.
