Darryl Strawberry pleased that Pete Alonso is about to break the Mets home run record

Daryl Strawberry Comments on Pete Alonso’s Pursuit of Mets Home Run Record

Daryl Strawberry holds the record for the most home runs in New York Mets history.

As Pete Alonso aims to break the 252 home run record set by Strawberry during his time with the team from 1983 to 1990, questions linger about how soon that might happen. Interestingly, Strawberry doesn’t seem particularly worried about losing this long-standing mark.

“You know, we’re talking about records that have stood for 35 years. That’s significant, and records are meant to be broken,” Strawberry mentioned to reporters at TD Bank Ballpark in Somerset before a game between the Mets and the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate. “I think some players believe their records should last forever, but that’s just not the case. There will be players who surpass them.”

Strawberry further expressed his support for Alonso, saying, “He’s not one of the bad guys in baseball. He genuinely loves playing in New York, and I hope he reaches that milestone soon.”

Currently sitting at 251 home runs, Alonso has had his opportunities to inch closer to tying the record but was held without a home run in his last two games against the Guardians.

Strawberry praised Alonso’s resilience under pressure, remarking that the first baseman’s approach and dedication reflect his hard work and commitment. “This shows he believes in himself. It’s not easy to perform in New York where expectations run high. A lot of people might not grasp just how challenging that is,” he said. “It’s similar to my experience; when you’re a young player eager to succeed, it’s all about getting the job done.”

While Alonso is in the spotlight, the Mets have faced difficulties lately, having lost eight of their last nine games.
