Alonso Ties Franchise Home Run Record
Milwaukee – After his return to the Mets last winter, the question loomed: when would Pete Alonso take his place in the franchise’s home run history?
Well, on Saturday night, that moment arrived.
Alonso hit his 252nd career home run, tying him with Daryl Strawberry for the top spot in the Mets’ record books.
Despite the Mets losing 7-4 to the Brewers at American Family Field, Alonso’s achievement was significant.
Throughout this journey, Strawberry has been supportive, encouraging Alonso to break his record. He even sent a text expressing his excitement about the tie last night.
“Congratulations,” Strawberry wrote. “Let’s go (Blue Heart and Orange Heart Emoji).”
Alonso, however, left the field without speaking to reporters. A club spokesman indicated he had to attend to a family matter.
This recent home run was Alonso’s fourth in the last eight games, having hit three during the latest Mets home stand. Earlier this season, he had also passed David Wright to secure second place on the club’s all-time list with homers 242 and 243 on June 8 in Colorado.
That night, he launched a 1-2 pitch from Tobias Myers over the left-center field fence for his 26th home run of the season.
Coach Carlos Mendoza congratulated Alonso right after his impressive feat. “It’s a special moment, but for him, it’s about winning,” he noted, adding that while he’s not focusing on such milestones, it certainly matters to Alonso.
Mendoza was asked about Alonso’s significance to the organization. “He means a lot,” he replied, acknowledging the importance of such a record, especially given the number of outstanding players who’ve worn the Mets uniform.
Frustrated by the loss, Francisco Lindor expressed happiness for Alonso’s achievement. “He’s one of the best power hitters in this organization and the league,” Lindor said. “What he does day in and day out is impressive. I’m proud to witness this.”
Lindor also indicated that the team is aware of how close Alonso is to becoming the sole leader in franchise history, saying, “That’s something he doesn’t mention much, but I’m sure he wants it.” He confidently remarked that Alonso would likely hit the next one soon, claiming the record for himself.
