Daryl Hannah Faces Criticism in FX’s “Love Story” Series
Daryl Hannah is back in the limelight following the release of FX’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.” Ever since the initial episodes debuted on February 12, viewers have taken to social media to express their opinions on how the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, depicted Kennedy’s former girlfriend.
Many fans, including those at Vogue, feel that the series casts Hannah in an unfavorable light. An opinion piece criticized her portrayal as a “whining, coke-obsessed prima donna,” suggesting it doesn’t quite match reality. The author even hinted that if they were in Hannah’s shoes, they’d consider legal action.
Viewers on platforms like Reddit shared similar sentiments, with one noting their impression that the writers harbor disdain towards Hannah. Another viewer lamented that her casting was detrimental to her reputation, adding that Hannah seemed to be caught in a difficult spot as Kennedy pursued a relationship with Bessette.
The dynamics between Hannah and Kennedy were complex. They met initially in the early 1980s and were deeply involved until their split in 1994, just before Kennedy began dating Bessette. The show has drawn attention to how Kennedy’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, disapproved of Hannah, as seen in tense dinner scenes depicted in the series.
Interestingly, Nina Jacobson, a producer on “Love Story,” admitted they did not reach out to Hannah prior to making the series. Instead, they based Hannah’s narrative on a book about Bessette’s life, which has raised eyebrows among fans who feel this results in a biased portrayal.
A Look Back at Their Relationship
Hannah and Kennedy first crossed paths again in 1988 at a family wedding. Their relationship became a source of tabloid fascination throughout the ’90s, much to Hannah’s frustration, as she frequently dealt with questions about marriage prospects while trying to maintain her privacy.
As their relationship evolved, they were often seen together, whether enjoying a casual bike ride in Central Park or dancing at home. However, behind the glamorous facade, there were struggles, not least of which were concerns from Kennedy’s family.
Unraveling Tensions
“Love Story” hints at the difficulties Hannah faced, particularly in navigating the expectations of the Kennedy family. A significant moment illustrated in the series is when Kennedy invites Hannah to his mother’s house, only for her to refuse to join them at the dinner table.
Some family members even suggested that Kennedy’s mother was warm and loving toward Hannah, contradicting the show’s narrative. Overall, there’s a sense that Hannah’s character has been unfairly shaped, leaving fans wanting a more nuanced representation of her relationship with Kennedy.
Aftermath and Moving Forward
Ultimately, Hannah and Kennedy ended their relationship in 1994. Shortly afterward, Kennedy married Bessette, but tragedy struck when their plane crashed in 1999, claiming both their lives, along with Bessette’s sister.
Hannah, on the other hand, continued her acting career and married musician Neil Young in 2018. As the conversation around “Love Story” continues, it seems there’s a strong desire for a more balanced perspective on the complex lives intertwined in this narrative.
