Debate Over Lakers’ 2020 Championship Continues

For quite some time now, critics and online trolls have labeled the Lakers’ 2020 championship as a “Mickey Mouse” title, suggesting it lacks authenticity.

Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the 76ers, shares some of those doubts. In a recent interview, he expressed that he isn’t convinced it holds the same weight as typical NBA championships, citing the unusual circumstances brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Had the Rockets taken home the title, I would have praised it as deserving, recognizing the hard work and resilience behind it,” Morey mentioned. “But nearly everyone I speak with about the league believes it doesn’t count as a true championship.”

He went on to imply that the 2020 championship may not be viewed in the same light as those won under normal conditions.

Morey added, “I think maybe the lasting legacy of the NBA bubble is that the NBA should take pride in its leadership during the pandemic.”

With no fans in attendance and the team unable to leave the Orlando Bubble, LeBron James and Anthony Davis guided the Lakers to their 17th franchise title, defeating the Heat in six games.

There’s some speculation that the veteran experience of the Lakers, particularly with an aging James and an ailing Davis, may have provided an advantage in the bubble setting.

This championship was significant for James, as it marked his fourth title and he was named NBA Finals MVP.

Morey’s Rockets faced the Lakers in the second round during his last season with the team in the bubble. After resigning in October 2020, he quickly took on a role with the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite his success in leading teams to the playoffs, he has yet to secure an NBA championship.
