Daughter of Canada’s Prime Minister and Belgian Princess Involved in Harvard-Trump Controversy

Harvard Challenges Trump’s Decision on International Students

Harvard University has taken legal action against the Trump administration due to its recent decision to revoke eligibility for schools that enroll international students. This conflict highlights a broader dispute between the prestigious institution and the federal government. Harvard claims that the administration’s move infringes on First Amendment rights and threatens the status of approximately 7,000 international visa holders.

In response to the lawsuit, a U.S. judge issued a temporary restraining order, effectively blocking the Trump administration from enforcing the decision to restrict Harvard’s ability to register international students.

This litigation stems from a request made by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem, who, on April 16, urged Harvard to cooperate in efforts that could potentially lead to the deportation of some students.

According to 2022 data, there were 686 Canadian students enrolled at Harvard, including Cleo Carney, the daughter of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Cleo has just completed her first year at Harvard as a student in the Resource Efficiency Program.

Another notable student affected by this situation is Princess Elizabeth of Belgium, the heir to the Belgian throne, who has also concluded her first year in a two-year master’s program in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Currently in Belgium, the Royal Palace has stated that she is seeking clarification regarding her ability to return for her second year.

Harvard has criticized the Trump administration’s actions as “illegal” and affirmed its commitment to supporting its community members during this turbulent period. The university emphasized that the administration’s actions attempt to marginalize a significant portion of the international student body that contributes to its mission and community.
