Dave Landau: A Comedian’s Journey

Dave Landau has faced a lot in his life—arrested over a dozen times, battling addiction, and witnessing his mother deal with serious mental health issues. Yet, somehow, he’s come through it, ended up as a suburban dad, and, oddly enough, finds humor in the situation.

He genuinely thinks all of this is pretty funny.

“Being a dad, a husband, and 16 years sober is better,” he states simply.

New Special

The comic, hailing from Detroit, dives into some truly dark topics in his latest special, “30 Minutes with Dave Landau,” filmed at the Creek and the Cave in Austin, with legendary producer Luis J. Gomez behind it.

Having left behind his drinking and drug use, Landau today insists that his current roles as a father and husband outweigh the chaotic past that provided much of his material.

But “sober” doesn’t equate to “wholesome.” In the upcoming thirty minutes, Landau touches on topics ranging from Islamic extremism in Michigan to cocaine that washes up in Florida, to his mother’s struggles with bipolar disorder, the emasculation he associates with electric cars, and managing to be, as he puts it, “the only man who can make a Catholic wake sound enjoyable.”

He makes a sharp joke about Sharia law and Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with a rapidly growing Muslim population.

“My wife got pulled over there,” he shares. “Not for speeding, just for driving a car.”

Aging and Fatherhood

Much of Landau’s humor focuses on becoming a middle-aged dad, particularly in a time when father figures don’t seem to hold the same esteem they once did.

“I miss when we drove muscle cars,” he reminisces. “There was something about your dad coming home, the sound of the engine. He’d stroll in, smoke a cigarette, maybe crack a beer.”

Now, the typical dad quietly pulls into the driveway in a Tesla—almost like “driving a cell phone”—and walks inside only to hit a vape.

“So you just smell lavender,” he quips, “until Dad ‘cracks a White Claw.’”

Then there’s the cringeworthy welcome from his kids: “How was work, wimp?”

Looking back at his younger years, Landau jokes about what it would have been like to live in Miami today, where cocaine occasionally makes its way ashore. He muses, perhaps jokingly, that it explains the plight of sea turtles found with straws in their noses.

Darker Subjects

But this is merely an introduction to the grimmer stories he shares—like his father’s poisoning from chemical exposure during Vietnam and his mother’s severe bipolar disorder, which ultimately led to her suicide.

And just to be clear, Landau is firm about the severity of the illness: “Serious bipolar disorder.” For those who nonchalantly describe themselves as bipolar, he has a rather pointed question: “You ever wear a wedding dress to your son’s wedding?”

He even recalls an event from three decades ago where he and his friends managed to convince people that an innocent stranger was responsible for one of their friends ending up pants-less in a dumpster.

It’s a type of anecdote that, if you give it too much thought, could become less funny. But, that’s his style. With topics like addiction, arrests, family tragedies, and mental illness, Landau offers a relentless stream of jokes, ensuring you rarely pause to feel the weight of the subjects being discussed.
