MLB All-Star Game Returns to Atlanta
The MLB All-Star Game was relocated from Atlanta to Denver in 2021 due to Georgia’s voting legislation, which then-President Joe Biden labeled as “steroid Jim Crow.” At that time, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned he considered stepping down to take control of the game if it had not been moved, as he had previously managed the National League team during the World Series.
MLB stated that moving the game was a significant way to emphasize the league’s commitment to voting rights. In light of this, Roberts found himself in the dugout that summer. However, the All-Star Game returned to Atlanta this year despite the voting laws remaining unchanged.
During a recent press conference, a reporter inquired about Roberts’ earlier remarks from 2021, particularly his assertion that “there is no mercy in our voice” regarding the decision to hold the game in Atlanta now. Roberts responded, “I don’t think our voices are merciless.” He reflected on the ongoing nature of these discussions, highlighting that it’s not just a one-time issue.
Pat McAfee, who left the press event, remarked that those present felt no obligation to provide commentary on the decision. He acknowledged the excitement surrounding hosting the game in Atlanta, stating it is a wonderful city for the event.
Roberts praised McAfee’s response, expressing gratitude for the question and highlighting the enthusiasm around celebrating talented athletes. He emphasized, “I’m not a politician,” indicating his preference to focus on the players rather than political context.
The 2021 Election Integrity Act brought about stricter voting regulations, including voter ID requirements and fewer drop-off locations, which Biden criticized. In a recent statement, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed appreciation for MLB’s return to Atlanta, noting the positive economic impact for local businesses. “I’m thrilled the game is finally here,” he said, reflecting on the previous controversy.
Roberts concluded with a recognition that the return of the All-Star Game benefits not only the Braves organization but also local vendors and the broader Atlanta community.
