Hasan Piker’s Rise in Online Political Media
Hasan Piker has become a prominent figure in the realm of online political media, but everything started at The Young Turks. This network was co-founded by his uncle, Cenk Uygur. Initially, Piker was just a loud, enthusiastic young man eager to inject his opinions into political discussions. Dave Rubin, who also used to work at The Young Turks, described Piker as “a big dude” who really stood out.
According to Rubin, Cenk Uygur took a chance on Piker, putting him on air despite many wanting the same opportunity. “Once he showed up, he just got on camera. Cenk essentially handed him the keys to the kingdom, and he has become quite the personality since then,” Rubin recounted in a chat with a media outlet.
Piker has maintained his anti-capitalist and progressive stance, gaining a dedicated following along the way. On the flip side, Rubin has had a shift in his political views, aligning more with the right. He pointed out in a 2017 video for PragerU that the Left seemed to be moving from progressive values to a more regressive approach, highlighting issues like cancel culture and censorship.
Hasan Piker’s Current Role
Rubin wasn’t shocked to see Piker transition from a Twitch streamer to what he calls the “brain trust” of the Democratic Socialists. He noted that Piker fills a gap for the Left, especially as right-leaning figures have gained visibility online. Piker stands out from typical left-leaning public figures in a way that resonates with younger audiences.
“There weren’t many entertaining new voices on the left,” Rubin lamented. He contrasted this with the diverse and appealing personalities on the right, mentioning figures like Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson. “The left had a few, but they often came off as dorky and less dynamic,” he noted.
Rubin remarked on Piker’s distinctive presence—he’s large, fit, and, despite his progressive views, exhibits qualities not traditionally associated with them. Rubin argues that Piker’s ideology includes strong criticisms of Israel. He mentioned that a lot of leftist commentary reflects an obsession that often borders on anti-Semitism, tying it back to a broader disdain for Jewish identity.
Controversial Remarks and Reactions
Piker has drawn criticism for comments surrounding Jewish Americans’ support for Israel. During a broadcast in late August, he suggested that America’s Jewish community might provoke negative reactions against themselves due to their perceived loyalty to Israel. This comment sparked outrage among many lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who had teamed up with Piker, distanced himself after the incident, emphasizing that Amercians should advocate for their beliefs without fear of violence.
Rubin believes that much of the critique of Israel involves Jews being seen as not fitting into the contemporary narratives of oppression. He pointed out that the historical persecution of Jews contrasts with their current success in America, challenging the concept of them as an “oppressed minority.”
In Rubin’s view, there’s a contradiction between Piker’s advocated beliefs and his lifestyle. He warned that while Piker can afford to immerse himself in capitalist living, the average follower might take his ideas at face value and consequently face consequences for actions inspired by them.
