Yankees’ Closer Situation Evolves with Bednar
Last year, during a game at Globe Life Field, Yankees manager Aaron Boone faced challenges with Clay Holmes filling the closer role. Just a couple of days later, Luke Weaver stepped up for his first save opportunity, which he successfully executed, but by October, he was out of the running.
This Tuesday, the Yankees found themselves back at Globe Life Field, and once again, Boone struggled to solidify the closer position. The following day, David Bednar got his debut chance to save a game, and he nailed it.
It’s evident that the Yankees have more options for closing this season compared to last. Bednar solidified his case on Wednesday with a gritty five-out save, which was crucial in helping the Yankees avoid a dreaded 0-6 road trip.
“To be honest, I was ready to ring the phone anytime during the game,” Bednar mentioned. “With all the talented arms we have, I’m always prepared to step in. My goal is to get as many outs as possible whenever my name is called.”
Bednar has shown he can close games effectively. In his previous stint with the Pirates, he was a two-time All-Star, racking up 101 saves.
However, closing games in the NL Central is quite different from doing so while wearing pinstripes. While the Yankees are still evaluating Bednar, his ability to handle high-pressure situations, like Wednesday’s demanding 42-pitch save, will help inform their decisions moving forward.
“I love that mentality,” Boone noted. “That’s what he embodies. If you dig into his background and hear the makeup reports, it aligns perfectly with what we’ve come to admire this week. He’s the type of player who says, ‘Give me the ball, let’s go.’ It’s been fantastic having him here in this first week, and I’m genuinely excited to welcome him.”
Bednar’s initial outing as a Yankee wasn’t without its hiccups; he gave up the tying run in a wild 13-12 loss in Miami on Friday. However, he bounced back significantly in his subsequent appearances, appearing much sharper and more comfortable in his new setting.
As the Yankees head back to the Bronx this weekend, they’re faced with another challenging matchup. They might consider utilizing Weaver and Kamilo Doval on Friday, assessing their situation further following that extensive 42-pitch outing to see who can close the game.
“Every time you take the mound, the aim remains the same,” Bednar stated. “But being in this position is really exciting. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
