Yankees Overcome Astros in Tense Victory
The eighth inning played out like a scene from a Yankees nightmare, one many fans might have hoped to forget.
David Bednar struggled initially, finding himself down 0-2 before issuing four consecutive balls to Christian Walker, which tied the game at 4-4. It’s hard to imagine how 45,738 fans felt in that moment.
Bednar didn’t just walk the bases loaded; he also hit the next two Astros batters, making it even tougher to escape the jam. However, the tide turned when Trent Grisham hit a homer, sealing a 5-4 victory for the Yankees against Houston in the Bronx on Saturday.
“I wanted one from Doval,” said manager Aaron Boone. “He’s had a great effort, and hopefully next time he can just get through one inning without issues.”
This performance from Bednar marked his third straight solid outing, proving invaluable after a taxing 42-pitch effort previously in Texas.
The situation with Walker was touch and go, but Bednar managed to stabilize himself, ultimately getting a simple 1-2-3 in the eighth.
With Devin Williams on a declining spiral, it seems Bednar is becoming Boone’s go-to option for later innings in close games.
“I think I’m still just getting used to when my name gets called. Every time the phone rings, I’m ready,” Bednar noted. It’s a familiar struggle for many in the Yankees bullpen, as new acquisition Doval has faltered since his arrival, while another recent trade, Jake Bird, was sent to Triple-A after just two appearances.
Initially, Bednar faced hurdles, blowing a save in his debut after joining from the Pirates at the trade deadline. Yet he has quickly proven himself as a critical asset for the team.
“It’s been incredible,” Boone acknowledged. “I can’t push him too hard; he’s done great work and I want to be careful not to extend him beyond 30 pitches.”
This season has been a rollercoaster, but perhaps Bednar is just what the Yankees need to navigate the chaos.
