David Cone believes the Yankees will reach the playoffs even with their recent difficulties

Yankees Analyst Optimistic Ahead of Crucial Games

Before the New York Yankees headed to St. Louis for the weekend series against the Cardinals, former five-time World Series champion and current analyst David Cohn expressed his belief that the team has everything it needs to push towards the postseason.

At that moment, the Yankees were facing a tough stretch. Fans were growing anxious, especially with tight playoff races developing in the American League. The thought of the reigning champions potentially missing out on the postseason lingered in the air.

Still, Cohn remained hopeful about the team’s chances.

“If they don’t make the postseason, I’d be really surprised,” he shared during a phone conversation. “I think they finally have all the right components in place. They dealt with some gaps earlier in the season, especially at third base, but they’ve addressed that now. Giancarlo Stanton has been able to play where he’s needed, and they’ve revamped the bullpen effectively. They’re filling the gaps and seem set to move forward instead of backtracking.”

The Yankees have won seven of their last ten games, improving their record to 67-57. While they’re chasing the Toronto Blue Jays for the top spot in the AL East, fans are more focused on the wild card race right now.

Three teams are vying for the two available American League wild card spots, along with the division leaders. The Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners are all in the mix. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians, at 64-60, sit just three games behind the Yankees, indicating that the path to October may not be all smooth sailing.

Cohn, familiar with the postseason pressure, knows what it takes for the Yankees to get back to that stage.

“It all starts with solid starting pitching,” he noted.

“They really need a strong push from their rotation.” He added that new additions like Carlos Rodon and Cam Schiltler, a promising young arm, could provide a significant boost. “Suddenly, the younger players are stepping up, which is great to see. There’s a sense of things aligning after some struggles.”

With Juan Soto joining the Mets this offseason, it’s clear the Yankees are seeking a powerful lineup that positions them for success. “The key questions, like the severity of Aaron Judge’s injury and if Stanton can manage right field, have been answered positively,” Cohn said. “I genuinely believe they’re in a favorable position now.”

Nevertheless, some fans feel this year’s roster doesn’t quite stack up to the 2024 team, and it’s hard not to feel that way. The Yankees have experienced two frustrating six-game losing streaks, and lapses in their play have contributed to shaky performances across the board.

For Cohn and the team, it’s essential to remember that reaching the playoffs can sometimes trump the regular season performance entirely. He recalled the Yankees’ 2000 World Series run, where they won 87 games. “When it mattered, we knew how to perform,” he reflected.

“Having playoff experience is invaluable,” Cohn added. “It’s clear this group has that confidence. They could really be a threat in October.”

With 38 games left in the season, the Yankees face crucial matchups that could determine their playoff fate. “Will next week’s series be the turning point?” he questioned, alluding to the upcoming opponents: the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.
