David Cone calls into ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ after ESPN absence

It was pretty much an off night for David Cone.

Cohn said in a post on X on Sunday that he would be unable to appear on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball Game” between the Yankees and Red Sox because he was “not feeling well.”

“Unfortunately I am not feeling well and will not be able to be in the booth with Carl (Labeck), Eduardo (Perez) and Buster (Olney) tonight. I will be here watching and commenting during the game. I hope to be back soon,” the former Yankees pitcher wrote.

Cone couldn’t stay away completely, calling in to analyze an inning despite spotty cell phone reception.

“David Cone has COVID-19 so he’s not in the booth tonight with Karl Labeck and Eduardo Pérez. He’s on the phone this inning. ESPN’s Sunday night trio is awesome.” MLB.com reporter Ian Brown wrote about X:

Cone missed very little from the Yankees defense as the Yankees continued their disappointing play in a 3-0 loss to the rival Red Sox.

“Sunday Night Baseball” will be on hiatus next week due to the upcoming MLB All-Star Game.

Major League Baseball opted to stay open through the night to allow for travel to the celebrations in Arlington, Texas, from July 12-16 this year.

National Sunday night broadcasts will resume next week when the Red Sox travel to Hollywood to take on the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

Cone joined the Sunday Night Baseball booth in 2022, served as a commentator for YES Network’s Yankees broadcasts and hosted a podcast called “Toeing the Slab with David Cone.”
