David Cohn from Mother Jones criticized President Trump in an article that emerged following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, starting off with a striking reflection on the ineffectiveness of gun control.
For example, Cohn acknowledges the vast number of guns in America, suggesting that the sheer volume makes it nearly impossible to prevent their misuse.
The article notes, “An estimated 500 million firearms are in civilian hands in the United States, where the population is 340 million. This means that one person represents about 0.000029% of that total, and only one of the five billion guns is needed to alter our reality.”
Cohn expresses, “We can’t stop all militants and confused individuals from committing violent acts.”
While he begins by highlighting the futility of regulating guns, he nonetheless advocates for increased gun control, stating, “We can definitely implement gun safety measures and stricter regulations while also offering more social services for those in need.”
It’s worth mentioning that Cohn does not suggest that “firearm restrictions” would have impacted the situation, given that Charlie Kirk was killed with a basic bolt-action rifle.
The specific bolt-action used is chambered in .30-06, a common choice for big game hunting. Generally, it has an internal magazine that holds about four or five rounds. Additionally, this kind of rifle requires manual operation between shots, such as lifting and pulling back the bolt to load a new round.
Instead of discussing gun control strategies for such straightforward firearms, Cohn shifts focus, writing, “We can also strengthen political initiatives to suppress the causes of violence.”
He elaborates on the crucial need for strong leadership, emphasizing, “As Donald Trump revealed in the immediate aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s tragic assassination, there’s little prospect that such events will occur on his watch.”
