Wisconsin Democrats Nominate David Crowley for Governor

In a closely watched primary, Wisconsin Democrats have selected Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over state Representative Francesca Hong. This decision has significant implications for the party, particularly regarding its ongoing ideological shifts.

Despite initially leading in polls, Hong—who is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America and has made some contentious statements—was ultimately edged out. Many influential party members, including outgoing Governor Tony Evers, endorsed Crowley, positioning him as a more moderate voice for the party’s future.

Now, Crowley’s sights are set on the November election where he will compete against Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, a Trump-backed candidate. This matchup is expected to garner considerable national attention.

As focus shifts to the general election, some are questioning how moderate Crowley truly is. Following his victory over Hong, a member of the party’s progressive faction, Crowley aims to unite various segments of the party.

At a recent Democratic unity breakfast, Crowley thanked Hong for her contributions and committed to winning over her supporters. He emphasized the need for inclusivity within the party, stating, “We should not be focused on kicking people out by saying they don’t belong.” He credited Evers, who had been a prominent supporter, as a crucial factor in his success.

Crowley plans to draw a “clear contrast” in the general election, describing it as a battle between Democrats and what he calls “MAGA extremists” represented by Tiffany.

A Milwaukee native, Crowley has a background as a community organizer. In 2020, he made history as the first Black individual elected to serve as Milwaukee County Executive. He often discusses his working-class roots and how his experiences with a challenging upbringing have shaped his perspectives.

Interestingly, Crowley’s path to this nomination was not straightforward. After initially withdrawing from the race earlier this summer, he had a change of heart, spurred by a personal experience involving a sign from his wife’s prayers—a red cardinal sighting—just before he was urged to run again.

His campaign addresses several platforms, including affordable housing, early childhood education, access to healthcare, clean energy investments, and protecting voting rights. Crowley has also been vocal against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), emphasizing a clear stance on immigration policies.

Democratic leaders quickly rallied behind Crowley after his primary win. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed hopes for collaboration to benefit working families in Wisconsin. State Democratic Party Chairman Devin Remiker praised Crowley’s readiness to confront Tiffany in the general election.

As Crowley’s campaign continues, his team plans to combat claims of divisiveness attributed to Tiffany and Trump, insisting on a message of unity and progress. His campaign manager noted that the choice for voters in November is about collaborative leadership versus the potential for divisiveness associated with Republican policies.
