David Gergen Passes Away at 83

David Gergen, who provided political counsel to four U.S. presidents—Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton—has died at 83. He passed away on July 10, with his son confirming the news after Gergen’s struggle with Lewy body dementia at a retirement home in Massachusetts.

Following his passing, tributes flooded social media from those who respected and admired him.

“David Gergen was a complete expert and a truly kind man. My thoughts are with his family. He loved politics and dedicated himself to serving this country,” shared Mariashriver on Twitter.

Former House representative Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.) expressed his sorrow, saying, “We lost something truly good—RIP, my friend David Gergen.”

Gergen is thought to have crafted a well-known line for Ronald Reagan during the 1980 campaign: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” He once remarked on the potency of rhetorical questions, emphasizing their impact.

Reflecting on his experiences in the Nixon White House during a 1981 interview with The Washington Post, Gergen recalled feeling naive and emotionally hardened by the environment, which affected his belief in people.

After stepping away from active politics, Gergen continued to influence public discourse through journalism and academia, contributing as an editor and columnist. He was involved with both the conservative American Enterprise Institute and the liberal Kennedy School at Harvard. Gergen also became a recognizable figure in broadcasting, sharing insights on PBS, CNN, and NPR.
