Democratic Gubernatorial Race in Florida: A Look at David Jolly and Angie Nixon

David Jolly, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Florida, is running alongside Angie Nixon, who is the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Senate candidate. Though Jolly attempts to present himself as a moderate, he holds several views that closely align with those of the DSA.

Once a Republican, Jolly has made a noticeable shift to the Democratic side, declaring his intention to apologize for Florida’s “culture wars.” During the pandemic, he notably supported former NIAID director Anthony Fauci while fleeing to Pennsylvania, a state with stricter restrictions, to criticize Governor Ron DeSantis for promoting personal liberties.

While not officially a member of the DSA, Nixon identifies with the organization, despite her claims of not being a socialist.

Jolly definitely finds himself echoing several positions championed by socialists:

• Support for Gender Transitioning in Minors: Jolly is in favor of allowing children to transition and has described legislation aimed at protecting minors from surgery as severe. The DSA, in a March press release, also criticized efforts to prevent gender-affirming care, which includes surgeries and hormone treatments.
• Backing Transgender Participation in Women’s Sports: He supports the participation of biological males in female sports categories. The DSA similarly opposes bans on transgender students in sports, as noted in their March statements.
• Pushing Against Gun Culture: Jolly has openly expressed a desire to combat gun culture in America, labeling the current response to gun violence as a major disgrace. His concerns echo those of the DSA, which views the Second Amendment as a threat, calling for its reexamination.
• Advocating for Critical Race Theory: Jolly believes teaching Critical Race Theory is vital for students, asserting that schools should provide a truthful representation of history, including the impacts of racism.
• Making School Choice More Challenging: He suggested limiting for-profit charter schools and making it difficult for schools accepting vouchers to charge extra fees. Jolly emphasized that he does not aim to eliminate school choice but rather to enhance public education to effectively compete with voucher schools. The DSA has criticized school choice for contributing to segregation and inequality.
• Opposition to Tax Cuts: Jolly has shown aversion to tax cuts, mentioning in an interview that he would discuss reversing certain tax provisions if elected. The DSA champions higher taxes on the wealthy as a policy goal.

Byron Donalds, Jolly’s Republican opponent, has accused him of masquerading as a moderate while supporting DSA tenets. He has also criticized Jolly for his past support of Fauci and suggested his actions demonstrate a broader allegiance to leftist ideologies.

Amid all this, Donalds remarked that Jolly’s moderate facade crumbles under scrutiny and that he strongly aligns with the DSA agenda. He highlighted how Jolly’s perspectives and alliances may impact his electoral journey in November.
