Letterman Defends Seth Meyers Against Trump’s Criticism
David Letterman, the iconic late-night television host, took a shot at President Donald Trump during a podcast that aired on Tuesday. This came after Trump criticized Seth Meyers, who hosts “Late Night” on NBC, in a post on Truth Social.
In the episode of the podcast hosted by Barbara Gaines, a former producer of “The Late Show,” Letterman stood up for Meyers against Trump’s remarks and even poked fun at the president. He expressed his pride in Meyers, saying, “The president of the United States wants to fire Seth Meyers right now, right? And I thought, ‘This is really gratifying. What do you think is going to happen?'”
On November 15, Trump took to social media to ridicule Meyers, claiming he was suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Trump went on to say that Meyers’ show was a “ratings disaster” and suggested NBC should fire him.
This criticism didn’t sit well with some, including Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, who shared Trump’s post, leading to accusations that he might be misusing his position.
It’s interesting how, not long ago, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was suspended from ABC for comments regarding a conservative figure, and CBS recently announced they would be canceling “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” In the midst of this, Letterman joked that Meyers should watch his back, quipping, “But just remember, Seth, things happen.”
As the conversation shifted, Letterman didn’t hold back in his assessment of Trump, labeling him a “dictator.” He reacted to a recent incident where Trump referred to a Bloomberg reporter in an insulting manner, saying, “Oh, how about that? Oh my gosh, that was so good. Oh, it’s absolutely amazing.” He concluded, “He’s our dictator, he’s not going anywhere.”
It’s quite a dramatic turn in late-night political commentary, and these situations seem to blur the lines more and more.
