One thing Washington politicians and Hollywood celebrities have in common is a penchant for awarding themselves meaningless and mysterious awards, but this week President Joe Biden took that practice to a whole new level of absurdity. I pulled it up.
On Thursday, Liz Cheney, a former Wyoming congresswoman and top hater of President Trump, co-chaired the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack, along with another co-chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson. He was awarded the Presidential Citizen's Medal in recognition of his accomplishments. .
Biden Award Liz Cheney, January 6 Chair A Medal: America is “excellent because of their dedicated efforts.”
So the problem is: Regardless of how one feels about the events of J6, the January 6 commission, complete with its glitzy prime-time hearings, was a disastrous and complete failure by any rational measure.
The American people were promised a decisive blow that would permanently end Donald Trump's political career. Instead, Cheney and Thompson delivered a super-soaker that was completely dry. By the way, Trump is scheduled to return to office in two weeks.

Good luck, everyone! This is your medal.
How much of a failure was the Cheney-led Soviet-style show trial? According to Monmouth University, before the 2022 hearings, 42 percent of Americans believed Trump was directly responsible for the January 6 riot, but after the ludicrous spectacle, that number dropped to 38 It dropped to %.
Millions of dollars were wasted, thousands of man hours were spent, and former ABC News producers were brought in to jazz things up, all to no avail. Because the American people know this when they see a sham trial.
After all, this means that the FBI's actions against Trump during Russiagate in 2020, before he succumbed to Trump Derangement Syndrome, were “coup-like” and may even be “treason.” This is the same person who said that, Liz Cheney.
But by the summer of 2022, Cheney saw an opportunity to get rid of Donald Trump once and for all and return the Republican Party to its good old establishment types like himself.

Trump, Cheney claims, was an insurrectionist who illegally opposed the certification of ballots in a free and fair election! Never mind, of course, that Co-Chairman Thompson himself refused to vote to certify the 2004 election. It seemed different.
These hearings featured a parade of particularly disgruntled former White House staffers and several Capitol Police officers, as well as a passionate Democrat who despises Trump and two people who may hate him. It drew loud praise from a podium filled with Republican congressmen Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger. Trump even more.
What really happened with Cheney is how relentlessly insufferable she became once her obsession with Trump started.
This whole ridiculous business adhered to fairness as closely as flipping a coin and shouting, “Heads I win, tails you lose.”
And speaking of losses, Liz Cheney lost her primary to Harriet Hageman by nearly 40 points during the commission's 10 televised hearings in the summer of 2022. The flames of her hatred for Donald Trump finally consumed Liz Cheney's political career.

Everything else was fine. Not the border, not the economy, not Joe Biden's corruption or incompetence. The only thing in the universe is a unique and sinister threat: Trump.
Even the fractious Kamala Harris campaign brought out old Angry Liz to drum up fear among non-existent “pro-Harris Republicans.” President Trump's most ardent critics can't understand why everyone else doesn't wake up and break out in a cold sweat over him like they do.
Liz Cheney could have supported her party and caucus in 2022. Even if he had criticized Trump, he could have refused to participate in Trump's unfair trial. If she had done so, she would probably still be in Congress. But instead, the insufferable scion of the Cheney political dynasty threw it all away because he thought he knew better than the people he served.
Now, instead of a seat in the halls of power, Cheney has a useless bauble given to him by a defeated lame-duck president.

Who can say what will happen next for Liz? After all, if someone as horribly unpopular as Meghan Markle can get a show, perhaps with her own Netflix special, then maybe someone as insufferable as Cheney can get a show too. Maybe.
Perhaps one day Cheney will add an Emmy to her Presidential Citizens Medal, but one thing is for certain: Liz Cheney will never again approach Republican power. That's certainly very good news.
Enjoy your medals, Liz. and early retirement.
