The Red Sox and Orioles are rivals in the American League East, but a shared hatred of the Yankees unites the two teams.
Orioles All-Stars Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutchman visited Globe Life Field with Red Sox legend David Ortiz ahead of the All-Star Game to recap Baltimore’s first half of the season.
Ortiz, of course, was referring to Sunday’s game against the Yankees, in which the Orioles trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning but went on to win 6-5.
The Orioles couldn’t contain their laughter.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Ortiz said. “I came from behind and I beat my guy. Just watch.”
The video shows Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe making a costly error that led to the first of the three runs that turned the tide.
“What did you think of this moment?” Ortiz asked, before showing the Orioles’ Cedric Mullins smashing a two-run double over the head of a stumbling and misplayed Alex Verdugo.
“So, bam, I love watching this and… I mean, wow, it makes me want to go out to dinner. Nice dinner, big steak, I’m here with my boys.”
Amusingly, Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, who was also hosting the show, held his hands over his face in embarrassment.
The rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees is deep in baseball history, and Ortiz was right in the middle of the battles between the two teams in the 2000s.
In 243 games with the Bronx Bombers, he batted .303 with 271 hits, 53 home runs, 171 RBIs and 150 runs scored.
In 2004, Ortiz helped the Yankees to a 3-0 comeback victory in the American League Championship Series, becoming the only team in MLB history to achieve such a come-from-behind victory.
