Patterson Backs Adams for NYC Mayor

Former Governor David Patterson has thrown his support behind the current New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, as the election heats up. Patterson, who has been critical of the political landscape, is standing firmly with Adams as he continues his efforts in City Hall.

At 55, Patterson is positioning himself as a key ally for the Democrats, especially as the race for re-election intensifies. This marks a notable shift since his previous endorsement of Andrew Cuomo, Albany’s former leader.

“I’ve been managing the city for nearly four years and I’m committed to supporting those who have initiated significant changes in past administrations,” Patterson stated during a press event outside City Hall, flanked by over two dozen supporters of Adams.

He emphasized the challenges currently facing the city, saying, “At this moment, we’re confronted with numerous difficulties, and it’s crucial that we stand by Mayor Eric Adams to lead us through.”

This endorsement comes shortly after Patterson suggested that GOP nominee Curtis Swa, along with independents, should unite to enhance their chances against the leading socialist candidate, Zohran Mamdani, ahead of the November election.

However, Patterson has since decided to abandon this idea. “It was meant to spark a conversation, but it seems none of the candidates were particularly engaged, so it feels moot now,” he remarked.

While Mamdani remains a frontrunner in various polls, Adams is seeing support that lands him in a respectable fourth place. Patterson had previously shocked observers by winning the Democratic nomination, and he has been vocal in his critiques of Mamdani, drawing stark comparisons to heavy political battles.

“It’s like comparing a lightning game to a bushfire,” he expressed, reflecting on the policy proposals brought forth by Mamdani, noting that significant resources are needed to enact real change.

Patterson drew parallels between the challenges faced by Queens councilors and the struggles of Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, whose reputation has suffered amid budget issues. “We cannot afford for our government to crumble, leaving us without leadership or direction,” he asserted.

Political veteran Bill Cunningham opined that Patterson’s backing could significantly bolster Adams’ campaign and hinder Cuomo’s ambitions. “This move would resonate with senior voters, particularly those who lean moderate to liberal,” he suggested.

However, Adams’ team is grappling with financial hurdles and strategizing how to leverage this newfound backing effectively.

In a somewhat surprising twist, Swa acknowledged his complex history with Patterson, stating, “I have political dizziness from my step husband, David Patterson. It feels like a whirlwind going from Adams to Jim Walden and back again. I mean, I’d prefer you not support me.”

Responding to Swa’s remarks, Patterson did not hold back. “Curtis Swa is a death kiss,” he retorted, emphasizing the intensity of the political rivalry.
