Mets Showcase Talent in Dominating Win Over Nationals

Francisco Lindor continues to shine, even with a broken pinky toe. Juan Soto remains a formidable presence, especially against the team that traded him after he led them to a World Series victory.

Pete Alonso is hitting hard, embodying his best self, while Jeff McNeil is also showing off his vintage bat control alongside some newfound power.

The Mets lineup is starting to meet the high expectations set during spring training, and they may soon add another strong hitter.

Brandon Nimmo made his presence known, hitting two home runs in the game against the Nationals, contributing to a 5-0 victory at Citi Field, where a full crowd of 40,681 cheered.

David Peterson was on the mound, achieving the team’s first shutout of the season. His defense played well, highlighted by an impressive throw from Tyron Taylor that caught Lewis Garcia Jr. at the plate. Peterson’s performance required efficient pitching, with his total count at 106 pitches for the complete game.

With this win, the Mets (44-24) have shown they can win in various ways, achieving a straight win streak of five and scoring victories in 10 out of their last 12 games, bringing them to 20 games above .500 for the first time this season.

As they prepare for a potential sweep on Thursday, the return of a strong Nimmo could brighten their prospects even further.

While Nimmo has transitioned from center fielder and is no longer running quite like before—partly due to an injury like plantar fasciitis last year—his recent form has been promising. He struggled early in the season, hitting just .212 with a .671 OPS up until May 21.

However, since Carlos Mendoza moved him to the second spot in the batting order against right-handed pitchers, Nimmo has surged. After a game where he went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run, he’s lifted his OPS to .741, hitting .305 over his last 16 games.

This is the kind of player the Mets envisioned when they signed him to a $162 million contract in the offseason.

In Wednesday’s game, seven hits and all five RBIs came from the top five batters in the lineup: Lindor, Nimmo, Soto, Alonso, and McNeil.

Soto hit another home run, his third in the last 11 games, while Alonso added an RBI double, marking his first in that game.
