David Peterson rebounds to guide Mets in series victory against Brewers

A Positive Start Can Make a Difference

A good start can change the game. It might cover up some weak spots in the bullpen or hide flaws that otherwise stand out. On Thursday, David Peterson returned to the mound, reminding everyone that the Mets have faced challenges due to a rotation that hasn’t been performing well in recent weeks.

After struggling in the previous two games, Peterson led the Mets to a 3-2 victory against the Brewers, much to the delight of a packed crowd of 42,241 at Citi Field. This win marked the Mets’ first series victory since sweeping the Nationals from June 10-12, pulling off just their fifth win in the last 19 games. It’s a bit of momentum as they head into their subway series, starting Friday.

The Mets (50-38) finally secured a series win, but the rotation has been rocky, heavily impacted by injuries and tough competition. Coach Carlos Mendoza noted that Peterson’s six innings pitched were the first time a Mets starter went that deep since June 17. Between June 18 and Wednesday, the Mets’ rotation recorded a troubling 5.96 ERA, which unfortunately included two of Peterson’s starts where he allowed ten runs across 8²/₃ innings.

David Stearns expressed confidence in Peterson, who managed to scatter five hits and recorded three walks, all while facing a decent Milwaukee lineup. The Mets’ offense pulled its weight to support him during the game.

Brandon Nimmo hit a home run for the second game in a row to give the Mets the early lead. Yet there were moments of tension, like when Rhys Hoskins connected with second baseman Brett Baty, causing a fielding error that led to a tying run. In a critical moment, Caleb Durbin’s slow roller found its way through for an infield single that evened the score.

Despite that, the Mets responded well. The top of their order, featuring Sterling Marte, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso, combined for key hits, resulting in a run that brought their score to three.

Peterson did allow another run in the seventh inning, with Andrew Monasterio hitting a home run on a four-seamer. However, Ryne Stanek and Edwin Díaz sealed the deal for the Mets, with Díaz notching his 18th save. A perfect play from Lindor, catching Christian Yelich stealing, capped off a solid night for the Mets.
