Mets Overcome Giants with Strategic Play

SAN FRANCISCO — David Peterson faced heavy traffic on the mound, almost reminiscent of the Bay Bridge during rush hour. Yet, he managed to find a way out when the Mets needed him most on Saturday night.

Peterson’s performance was under constant scrutiny. Despite the pressure from opposing hitters, he managed to secure crucial outs, whether through double plays or strikeouts.

In six innings, Peterson allowed the Mets to secure a 2-1 victory over the Giants at Oracle Park. This win puts the Mets in a good position, currently leading the NL East ahead of the Phillies, and they are eyeing a second consecutive series sweep on Sunday. With this victory, the Mets matched their longest winning streak of the season.

Even though Peterson permitted 11 base runners through six innings, he yielded just one run. This marked his first time pitching at least six innings this season, and notably, the Mets’ starters have now pitched six or more innings in 105 games overall.

After throwing 91 pitches, Peterson reduced his ERA to 2.83 across four consecutive starts, managing to keep his performance steady while allowing only singles on all eight hits he gave up that night.

The pivotal moment for the Mets came when Mark Bientos hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, turning the 1-0 deficit into the lead. Though the Mets had limited success with runners in scoring position, they kept the pressure on.

Reed Garrett, Lynn Stanek, and Edwin Diaz each provided scoreless innings of relief. Diaz notched his 22nd save in as many chances, securing the final two outs decisively. A memorable moment included Pete Alonso’s impressive grab on Patrick Bailey’s line drive, showcasing a strong defensive effort from the Mets’ first baseman.

Francisco Alvarez almost broke through for the Mets with a couple of triples, taking advantage of a misjudged ball by Louis Matos, although Tyrone Taylor worked to end the threat.

In a frustrating turn, the Mets loaded the bases for the fourth time against Robbie Ray but couldn’t capitalize. Vientos hit before Alvarez grounded into a double play to conclude that inning.

Alonso led off with a single, and Sterling Marte moved him to third with a double. A roller from Brett Batty, which could have easily gone wrong for the defense, allowed Alonso to score.

However, Peterson found himself in trouble again when consecutive singles followed by a walk loaded the bases for the Giants, leading to a run via a fielding choice from Jung Hoo Lee to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

Earlier, Peterson executed a double play after Wilmer Flores and Lee reached base, skillfully working his way out of jams. He also started the game strong, turning a line drive from Chapman into another out.

During the fifth inning, Peterson struck out three batters, efficiently navigating a situation that included a single from Heliot Ramos.

In the sixth, Juan Soto added a stolen base—marking the Mets’ 26th consecutive successful steal, the longest streak in the MLB this season. Marte walked immediately before Bientos’ two-run double put the Mets ahead, 2-1.

Ryan Walker came in to replace Ray and quickly walked Alvarez and Taylor to load the bases again, but ultimately struck out Nemo on three called strikes.

Peterson closed out the inning when Flores tried to stretch a single into a double but was thrown out, demonstrating how crucial defensive plays can help seal a game.
